How to Improve Your Accuracy with a Recurve Bow

Mastering the fundamentals of shooting a recurve bow is key to developing consistency, accuracy, and confidence on the range. Whether you are new to archery or refining your skills, proper technique will help you shoot more effectively. From building a solid stance to executing a smooth release, each step in the shot process plays a crucial role in your overall performance.

Here are some essential tips to help you tighten your groups and improve your accuracy.

1️. Build a Solid Foundation with a Proper Stance

A great shot starts with a stable stance. Straddle the shooting line with your feet shoulder-width apart and a slightly open stance toward the target. Keep your weight balanced and posture relaxed but strong.

2. Maintain a Relaxed Grip

Your bow hand should be relaxed – avoid gripping too tightly. Lock your wrist back and press your hand against the grip. Your knuckles should sit at a 45-degree angle. A loose grip prevents torque and improves accuracy.

3. Use Back Tension for a Smooth, Powerful Draw

Your rhomboid (back) muscles should power your draw, not just your arm. Draw the string straight back, in a slow and controlled motion. Keep your draw elbow in line with the arrow.

4. Anchor Consistently for Repeatable Shots

Consistency turns good archers into great ones. Set your index finger at the corner of your mouth, ensuring consistent facial contact with every shot. A repeatable anchor point leads to improved form and better results.

5. Trust Your Aiming Method

Don’t overthink this step! Whether you use a gap shooting or string walking aiming method, keep your eye focused equally on the arrow tip and your aim point. Keep your body aligned and avoid aiming for more than 2-3 seconds prior to release.

6. Let your Release Happen Naturally

A forced release adds torque and affects accuracy. Instead of actively letting go, relax your fingers and let the string release smoothly. After the release, let your draw hand land on your shoulder, and your bow arm should remain extended until your arrow hits the target.

7. Stay Relaxed and Trust the Process

Tension and overthinking can sabotage your accuracy. Trust your form and let the shot happen naturally.

  • Take a deep breath before drawing
  • Stay relaxed to avoid unnecessary tension
  • Keep a consistent shot routine to build confidence

8. Train with Purpose and Structure

Shooting more arrows isn’t enough; practicing with intention is what improves accuracy. Try these drills:

  • Blank Bale Shooting: Stand close to a target with no bullseye and focus purely on your form.
  • String Training: At the end of each practice session, draw and hold your bow without releasing to build strength and stability.
  • Walk-Back Drill: Start at five yards. When you have a tight group of arrows, move back to 10, then 15, and so on.

Final Thoughts

Improving accuracy with a recurve takes time, patience, and dedication. By refining these steps in your shot process, you’ll build repeatable form that will lead to more consistent results at the archery range. Practice with intention, trust your training, and enjoy the process of becoming a better archer!
