Fall Hiking Adventures in Southeastern Pennsylvania
BY COREY S., PROGRAM COORDINATOR
As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin their vibrant transformation, fall becomes the perfect season to hit the trails. Cooler temperatures and fewer bugs make hiking not just bearable—but truly enjoyable. Southeastern Pennsylvania offers a variety of scenic trails, from gentle walks to challenging climbs, all surrounded by stunning autumn foliage. Here are three standout destinations to explore this season.

1. Ridley Creek State Park: A Local Gem
Located in Delaware County, Ridley Creek State Park spans over 2,600 acres and offers 13 miles of well-maintained trails suitable for all skill levels. Whether you're looking for a peaceful stroll or a moderate hike, this park delivers wide paths and picturesque views of Ridley Creek winding through pastoral landscapes.
One of the park’s highlights is its historic mansion and 18th-century farmhouse, where reenactments bring history to life. In the fall, the changing leaves add a magical touch to the scenery.
Pro tip: Arrive early—Ridley Creek is a popular spot for both hikers and anglers.
2. French Creek State Park: Trails for All
A bit farther from Philadelphia, French Creek State Park offers 40 miles of trails through a second-growth forest. This park is a haven for hikers and mountain bikers alike, with trails ranging from easy to moderate.
A favorite route is the Lenape Trail to Raccoon Trail loop, starting at the Shed Road trailhead. It’s a scenic 5-mile hike that showcases the park’s natural beauty. Another popular option is the Six Penny Trail, a moderate 3-mile loop that’s perfect for a shorter adventure. Many trails also pass by the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, adding a touch of history to your hike.
3. Lehigh Gap East Loop: Worth the Climb
If you're up for a challenge and willing to drive north, the Lehigh Gap East Loop on the Appalachian Trail is a must. This trail features a 900-foot elevation gain in just half a mile, with rock scrambles and boulder climbs that require both hands and grit.
The reward? Breathtaking views of the Lehigh River and some of the best leaf-peeping in the region. The descent via the Blue Trail offers a gentle contrast to the steep ascent, making for a well-balanced and unforgettable hike. This trail is difficult, but absolutely worth the effort.

Final Thoughts
Fall is fleeting, but the memories you make on the trail will last. Whether you're looking for a relaxing walk or a heart-pounding climb, Southeastern PA has something for every hiker. So, lace up your boots, pack some snacks, and hit the trail—adventure awaits!
