5 Amazing Paddling Spots in the Greater Boston Area
BY BEN S., PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Looking to make the most of the beautiful summer weather and get out on the water? Whether you're a seasoned paddler or just getting your feet wet, Greater Boston offers a variety of scenic and accessible spots perfect for kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding. But, before you launch, here are a few important safety reminders to keep in mind:
- Wear your life jacket! A personal flotation device (PFD) only works when it’s on and properly secured. If nature sends you swimming, you’ll be glad it’s already on.
- Pay attention to conditions. Always look at the weather forecast and tides before heading out and keep an eye on the sky throughout the day. Be ready to change your plans if needed. Stay alert while paddling – motorboats and ferries may not see you easily.
- The best piece of safety gear is a buddy. Even if you're paddling with someone else, let someone on shore know your plan and when you expect to return.

1. Lake Cochituate (Natick/Wayland/Framingham)
A freshwater gem made up of three connected ponds, Lake Cochituate is a favorite for beginners and families.
Why We Love It: Tons of shoreline to explore, easy Launch Points, and calm waters.
Insider Tip: Stick to the North Lake on weekends and holidays – there’s a speed limit for all boats and no tubing or waterskiing allowed, making it more peaceful for paddlers.
Launch Points:
- Boat ramp with facilities on Middle Lake (paid parking).
- Several launch points on North Lake.
2. Charles River (Various Towns)
Massachusetts’ most iconic river offers something for paddlers of any experience level, from city views to quiet meanders through the suburbs.
Why We Love It: Dozens of launch points, rental options, and rich history along its 80-mile stretch.
Choose Your Adventure:
- Paddle past the skyline from the Charles River Esplanade.
- Explore the winding upper river in Medfield.
- Take a guided tour or class with Outdoor Discovery Programs on the middle river in Dedham.
3. Plymouth Bay
For paddlers with a bit more experience, Plymouth Bay offers a coastal adventure with a touch of history.
Why We Love It: Protected by barrier peninsulas, the bay stays relatively calm even on windy days.
Highlights:
- With the exception of a few major channels, the bay is very shallow, keeping big boats away.
- Paddle to scenic peninsulas or wave at the Mayflower II.
- Excellent birdwatching along the protected dunes.
Launch Points:
- Stephen’s Field (watch for mud at low tide).
- There are several public launches up north in Duxbury Bay.
4. Hingham Harbor
A saltwater playground with islands to explore and views of the Boston skyline, Hingham Harbor is perfect for intermediate paddlers.
Why We Love It: Ocean vibes without the big exposure.
What to Explore:
- Paddle around small islands.
- Cruise along the coast of World’s End.
- If you’re looking for a little more mileage, bring a picnic lunch out to Bumpkin Island for a short stroll on this historic site.
Launch Point: Hingham Town Boat Ramp.
5. Winthrop Harbor
Looking for a more dynamic paddling experience? Winthrop Harbor offers a mix of calm coves and open harbor exploration.
Why We Love It: Unique views of Logan Airport and the Boston skyline, plus access to Boston Harbor’s hidden corners.
Routes to Try:
- Head southeast to Deer Island to check out the 150-foot tall sludge digesters of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, a newer but still-iconic landmark of Boston Harbor. Watch out for strong currents at the tip of Deer Island. Best to stay clear near mid-tide.
- Paddle northwest toward East Boston for a more protected paddle through shallow estuaries.
Launch Point: Winthrop Boat Launch.

Whether you're looking for a peaceful inland paddle or a salty adventure, Greater Boston has a spot for you. So, grab your paddle, zip up that life jacket, and get out there!
