Sea Kayaking Skills 3 – Freeport

Freeport, Maine

Perfect for kayakers who want to learn how to read nautical charts, become safer paddlers, and confidently venture out into ocean environments. Our Sea Kayaking Skills 1 or equivalent is highly recommended to get the most out of the Sea Kayaking Skills 3 course.

This one-day course includes classroom time followed by an on-water navigation session to help you take your navigation skills to the next level. During the classroom lesson, kayakers will learn the Navigational Rules of the Road, plus all aspects of chart concepts reading (colors, latitude, longitude, buoys, and lights), dead reckoning, aiming off, and how to triangulate your position (in other words, not getting lost). Students will also learn detailed tabletop trip planning as well as on-water deck-top navigation and course adjustment. Kayakers will also gain a full understanding of tide/current logs, effects of fog, wind, waves, and boat traffic. Leave No Trace ethics and VHF radio use will also be discussed for those looking to venture out into the ocean environment.

During the on-water lesson, students will test their skills by paddling a plotted route using deck-top navigation tools, conditions permitting.
