This three-night winter getaway in the Adirondack Mountains is designed for snowshoers of all abilities who are seeking a winter adventure with the support of experienced local guides and the comfort of a cozy lodge at day’s end. Based out of the historic Garnet Hill Lodge overlooking Thirteenth Lak, you’ll spend two full days exploring snowy trails and stunning winter landscapes in and around the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park.

Each evening, your guides will preview the next day’s route options, including easier and more challenging hikes, so you can choose the experience that best matches your comfort level. Along the way, you’ll snowshoe through a mix of groomed and ungroomed trails while learning about the area’s landscape, history, and winter environment.

After time on the trail, return to the lodge for hearty buffet-style meals, fireside relaxation, stargazing, s’mores by the campfire, and a restful night in your private room. Between hikes, you’ll also have time to slow down, enjoy the views, read by the fire, play pool, sip something warm, or connect with fellow adventure seekers.

Additional Information

  • Activity Description & Prerequisites

    Activity Description

This trip is designed for both first-time and experienced snowshoers who are excited to explore the Adirondack Mountains during winter. To get the most out of the experience, participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable walking or hiking for several hours in changing winter trail and snow conditions.

Each full day, guests will be able to choose between two guided snowshoeing options: an easier route and a more challenging route. Easier hikes may cover up to 3–4 miles over 2–3 hours with little or no elevation gain. More challenging hikes may cover 4–7 miles over 3–5 hours with elevation changes of up to 1,000 feet.

Each evening, local guides will review the next day’s route options, including difficulty, terrain, expected pace, and points of interest. All hikes are led by certified New York State Guides with Wilderness First Aid certification, giving guests knowledgeable support throughout the experience.

When not snowshoeing, guests can relax at Garnet Hill Lodge and enjoy views of Thirteenth Lake and the surrounding Adirondack Mountains.

  • Additional Trip Details

Below you’ll find more information about this trip and what you’ll need to know in order to prepare for your adventure.

    Destination/Travel Time

Garnet Hill Lodge is located in North River, New York, with Albany International Airport serving as the closest airport. Round-trip shuttle service from the airport is available for $135 per person. You may add the shuttle when booking your trip or call L.L.Bean Adventure Consultants at 888-552-3261 to add it later.

If driving yourself, the final approach to the lodge is on a well-marked windy dirt road. Cell service may be spotty as you get closer to the lodge.

    Accommodations

Experience the beauty of the Adirondack Mountains with a stay at Garnet Hill Lodge, overlooking Thirteenth Lake. This cozy retreat, built in 1936, offers a warm atmosphere with a lobby featuring a garnet stone fireplace and comfortable seating and social areas.

Your private room includes all linens and towels, newly renovated bathroom, electrical outlets, and in-room heating. Balcony rooms overlooking the lake and mountains are available at an additional cost.
Your trip includes three breakfasts, two self-packed lunches, and three dinners. Enjoy daily hot and cold breakfast buffet options, self-packed lunches for your hiking adventures, and hearty buffet-style dinners with meat or fish and vegetarian entrée options plus salad, sides, and dessert. Complimentary coffee, tea, and cocoa are available 24/7, and a cash bar with beer, wine, and mixed drinks is open in the afternoons and evenings.

    Connectivity
There is wireless internet available at the lodge. Cellphone coverage can be intermittent.

    Clothing Considerations
Dressing in layers is the key to staying comfortable in the outdoors. Multiple layers allow flexibility to respond to your activity level and changing weather conditions.

Please avoid bringing all-cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. Synthetic fabrics are best because they don’t absorb water, and they also dry quickly.

For an outer layer, we recommend waterproof/breathable outer shell. This gear will protect you from the wind and rain and help keep you dry.

    Luggage
A medium-size duffle bag should be appropriate to pack the personal items you will need for the trip. You should also bring a day pack to carry a water bottle, packed lunch, extra layer, hat, camera, sunglasses, etc., while snowshoeing. You are welcome to pack as much as you need to be comfortable; it is a short walk from where you park your car to Garnet Hill Lodge.

    Smoking and Tobacco Policy

L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery Programs activities are tobacco- and smoke-free (including electronic smoking devices) in support of a healthy lifestyle and respect for our participants and guests. We thank you for understanding and respecting this policy.

    Alcohol Policy

In general, alcohol consumption is not permitted during L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery Programs events for the safety of all participants. However, alcoholic beverages are allowed on overnight trips and may only be consumed in a responsible way after the day’s activities are finished. If participants consume alcohol to excess in the evening and behave in ways that negatively impact their own safety, that of the group or the natural environment around them, our guides will intervene. We hope that we will never have to remove an offending guest from the remainder of a trip to ensure the group’s safety, but we will do so if necessary.

    • Participants must be 18 years of age by the start of trip.
  • Solo Traveler: NY Adirondack Mountains Hiking Trip
All rates are based on double occupancy.

If you are traveling solo and would like to ensure a private room, an additional $235.00 Solo Traveler Private Room fee applies. This fee can be added by selecting the Solo Traveler Private Room add-on when making your reservation. If the add‑on is not selected at checkout, the fee will be added when your reservation is confirmed and will be due with your final payment.

To reduce the cost of single occupancy, we are happy to attempt to pair solo travelers of the same gender to share a room. If you select this add-on during booking, a $125.00 Solo Traveler Roommate fee will be applied. If the add‑on is not selected, the fee will be added when your reservation is confirmed and will be due with your final payment.

If we are able to pair you with another solo traveler, the $100.00 Solo Traveler Roommate fee will be fully refunded. If we are unable to find a match, you will still be provided a private room, and the initial $100.00 fee will remain as your single‑occupancy charge.

Gratuities for L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery Programs guides and instructors are appreciated but never expected, and the amount is entirely at your discretion. If you choose to tip, a common guideline is to give 10-20% of the trip or program cost. Gratuities may be given in cash or through a digital payment app, typically at the end of the experience. For programs with multiple guides or instructors, gratuities will be shared among the team.
  • Essential Eligibility Criteria: NY Adk Winter Trip
As part of completing your registration for this trip, we invite you to take a moment to review the Essential Eligibility Criteria. These criteria are designed to help you and the members of your party feel confident and well-prepared for the experiences included in this program. They describe the minimum abilities and self-management expectations required to participate safely. Guides are present to lead the group and respond to emergencies, but they cannot eliminate inherent risks. Participants are responsible for self-assessing their abilities, recognizing their personal limitations, and communicating their concerns early on.

If you find that you can comfortably agree with all the statements listed, please indicate your acceptance to continue the registration process. As part of each trip, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Should you have any questions or want to talk through any of the criteria, we’re here to help—please don’t hesitate to reach out for additional information or support.

For additional information to support your trip planning, please take a moment to review the “Additional Trip Details” section on our website. This section can be found on the webpage for each of our overnight trips.
