Freeport, Maine

Six outdoor adventures. Two full days. One unforgettable weekend.

This summer, truly experience Maine by boat, bike and SUP with L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery Trips, a leader in outdoor adventures for over 40 years. Designed for an ultimate Maine experience, this fun-filled small-group adventure features an exciting variety of outdoor activities from our popular Discovery Course series.

Led by our expert instructors, you'll paddle to favorite destinations by kayak; learn how to stand up paddle board; tour scenic routes by road bike; try your hand at fly casting and wing shooting; and practice hitting the bulls-eye with a bow and arrow. Designed for all levels of adventurers, all equipment and training is provided, and no previous experience required. Our guides love what they do and where they live and cannot wait to share these Maine adventures with you.

After a fun-filled day of Discovery Courses, we will return to our oceanfront campsite, which includes comfortable tents with cots and hots showers. And, since a trip to Maine is not complete without enjoying traditional Vacationland favorites, our Discovery Weekend trip also includes a hearty lobster (or steak) dinner and a delicious blueberry pancake breakfast.

With lodging, meals, expert instruction, gear, incredible outdoor setting and plenty of fun included, there is no better way to discover Maine.

  • Additional Trip Details

Below you’ll find more information about this trip and what you’ll need to know in order to prepare for your adventure.

    Destination/Travel Time
The trip kicks off in Freeport, Maine, at our Paddling Center. Some activities start right at the Paddling Center, while a couple of the activities take place a short 10-minute drive away (shuttle provided).

    Accommodations
You will be camping at our oceanside Paddling Center. Here we have tents on wooden platforms for you to stay in, with views overlooking the ocean. Each tent has a lantern, headlamps and two cots with freshly cleaned sleeping bags. A short walk from your tent will bring you to our main building where we have sinks, flush toilets and hot showers available for your use at any time.

    Connectivity
While at the Paddling Center, cell phone service is available for most carriers when close to the main building. While out on the activities, coverage is less consistent. Wi-Fi is available in the main building at the Paddling Center.

    Clothing Considerations
Dressing in layers is the key to staying comfortable in the outdoors. Multiple layers allow flexibility to respond to your activity level and changing weather conditions.

Please avoid bringing all-cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. Synthetic fabrics are best because they don’t absorb water, and they also dry quickly.

For an outer layer, we recommend waterproof/breathable outer shell. This gear will protect you from the wind and rain and help keep you dry.

    Luggage
A medium-sized duffle bag should be appropriate to pack the personal items you will need for the trip, but you are welcome to pack as much as you need to be comfortable. Because the tents are located a short walk from where you park your car, you can leave any items either in your car or in your tent.
  • What to Bring

    • Weather- and activity-appropriate clothing (preferably synthetic*)
    • Rainwear

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in multiple layers, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to the weather conditions and your level of exertion.

    Alcohol Policy

In general, alcohol consumption is not permitted during L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery Programs events for the safety of all participants. If participants consume alcohol to excess in the evening and behave in ways that negatively impact their own safety, that of the group or the natural environment around them, our guides will intervene. We hope that we will never have to remove an offending guest from the remainder of a trip to ensure the group’s safety, but we will do so if necessary.

As part of completing your registration for this trip, we invite you to take a moment to review the Essential Eligibility Criteria. These criteria are designed to help you and the members of your party feel confident and well-prepared for the experiences included in this program. They describe the minimum abilities and self-management expectations required to participate safely. Guides are present to lead the group and respond to emergencies, but they cannot eliminate inherent risks. Participants are responsible for self-assessing their abilities, recognizing their personal limitations, and communicating their concerns early on.

If you find that you can comfortably agree with all the statements listed, please indicate your acceptance to continue the registration process. As part of each trip, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Should you have any questions or want to talk through any of the criteria, we’re here to help—please don’t hesitate to reach out for additional information or support.
